PHOENIX, 27 March 2004:
One thing was for certain: Afshin A would
not be finishing second this year. He declined the invitation to defend his bridesmaid
title.. Something about a protest. Or something...
This year's contests
featured some of the fiercest competition yet seen in the history of this storied
event. Two of the matches went extra length, and others were nail-biters right down
to the end. And after regulation play, there was a three-way dead heat for the
title! Defending Champ Jim Phipps, former champ David Gonzales and dark-horse first-year
competitor Greg Opland needed to go through a historic first tiebreaking bracket.
Even though Mr. Gonzales had the advantage in the tiebreaker, he fell in the end
to defending champion Phipps in the title game.
Congratulations to Jim Phipps,
who successfully defended his title. He once again brought home the coveted bloody
eyeball, and also was awarded a VHS copy of the film Forrest Gump! (thanks,
Joe)
